Detroit Pistons Take Major Step in Attempt To Improve Team After Historically Bad Season
Reggie Hildred-USA TODAY Sports

Even with talented young guys in the roster, the Detroit Pistons failed to make full use of them to show signs of improvement during the NBA season. As a result, the front office has taken a major step towards the right direction to get out of the rut they’re currently in.

Last season, the Pistons ended their run as the NBA’s worst team with 17 wins and 65 losses. Both their offense and defense were ranked 28th among 30 teams, leading almost every squad to dismantle them on a nightly basis. Worse, they didn’t have point guard Cade Cunningham in his sophomore year, taking away their best player in the process.

Even with their horrendous record last year, the Pistons were unable to land the number one pick, which could have translated to Victor Wembanyama . Instead, the team drafted Ausar Thompson but the pick didn’t help improve their chance to improve this season.

Now, after enduring all 82 games of the regular season, Detroit once again finished with the worst record in the NBA. Even with a healthy Cunningham, the Pistons’ poorly-structured roster around the young point guard didn’t really do the franchise any favors at all.

Detroit Pistons Announce Search for New Head of Basketball of Operations After Historically Bad NBA Season

After a historically bad season, the Pistons front office have made their first step in improving the team. In an announcement shared by Marc Stein on X:

Furthermore, ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski clarified that the Piston’s front office structure will remain the same.

“Detroit Pistons GM Troy Weaver will remain in place as the franchise begins a search for a new head of basketball operations, sources tell ESPN,” Woj tweeted.

Of the pieces Detroit has in its roster, Cunningham and Jalen Duren have shown promise and flashes of potential during the past season. Meanwhile, players like Killian Hayes, James Wiseman, and Jaden Ivey haven’t really made a lasting impact on the court for the team.

It remains to be seen how this move will improve the Pistons in the coming months. For sure, Detroit is going to be busy in the offseason to get itself out of the rut they have been in for the longest time.
